WOW BOOK BY 50 YOUNG MALAYSIAN AUTHORS LAUNCHED
Marine “eco-warriors” unleash their creativity and receive recognition
8-July 2023, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – The TOEFL We Ocean Warrior (WOW) Short Story Writing Competition, a collaboration between Test Center Malaysia and the Marine Life Conservation Society (MALCONS) in conjunction with the Royal Pahang International Billfish Competition, was completed today with the launch of the book entitled “50 WOW Short Stories on Saving Marine Life Volume II”.
The objective of the TOEFL WOW Short Story Writing Competition is to provide a platform for Malaysian school children ages 10 to 17 years old to submit their original fictional essays written in English with the theme of marine life conservation.
This is the second year that this competition was held and a total of 77 schools took part and 615 entries were received from our Malaysian school children, out of which 505 entries were from the secondary school category and 110 were from the primary school category. This is a 13% increase in the number of participants from the previous year’s competition.
Encik Sheikh Faisal Sheikh Mansor, the President of Malaysian Book Publishers Association (MABOPA) launched the book today and in attendance were 31 of the 50 winners accompanied by their teachers, parents and peers. “We need good books, and current books and in today’s digital and trendy world, children will look for and follow stories or contents created by their peers and this 50 WOW Short Stories book created by our Malaysian school kids is a perfect example of the type of contents we need today,” said Sheikh Faisal.
Ezani Amir, Managing Director of Eshia & Associates Sdn Bhd, the organizer of the competition said “The WOW competition provided significant English language exposure and learning outside the classroom environment. Conducted entirely online over an 8-week period, the students were exposed to reading skills, listening skills, and writing skills by our TOEFL Master Trainers.” He added, “This project is truly a collaborative effort as the students, teachers and parents were also made aware of and potentially inspired on the importance of marine life conservation by subject matter experts from MALCONS, Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark, Universiti Islam Antarabangsa, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Yayasan Coral Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, and MELTA Pahang Chapter”.
“The TOEFL WOW Essay Writing Competition offers a transformative experience for young writers, particularly those who are shy or introverted. Challenged to think as “eco-warriors”, it serves as a dynamic platform for them to unleash their creativity and receive recognition. Winning essays are not only celebrated but also published in a book, allowing these talented writers to see their work in print and displayed in libraries. This tangible achievement boosts their self-esteem and ignites a sense of empowerment and accomplishment.”, said Aimi Shaheera Binti Salleh, a TOEFL Young Student Series Master Trainer and also an English teacher from MRSM Balik Pulau, Penang.
Congratulations to the 50 secondary school winners and the three special entries from the primary school category. This competition fosters a community of like-minded individuals as participants have the opportunity to share and connect their writing with peers through the powerful medium of the written word.

New AirAsia applicants to sit for language proficiency test
SEPANG: A believer of “now everyone can fly”, AirAsia Bhd now wants every flight attendant to “soar” in their service speaking correct English. The airline is making it compulsory for new applicants for jobs as flight attendants in countries where AirAsia operates to sit for the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC), a global English test standard.
A Growing Consensus: AirAsia Adds TOEIC English Testing
Last week, the AirAsia Group, Asia’s largest low-fare airline, announced that it would be requiring TOEIC test scores for all flight attendant applicants. The company, which is based in Malaysia and serves some 400 destinations in more than 20 countries, is in agreement with many others in the industry who have been finding TOEIC tests to be the right fit for their needs.
